GAINESVILLE, Fla. — More than 100 young people took to the skies of possibility during the 8th Annual Aviation Day hosted by 100 Black Men of Greater Florida Gainesville, where mentorship, education and history came together to inspire the next generation of leaders. This year’s event paid special tribute to Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Jr., the first Black four-star general in U.S. military history. His image appeared on the back of every Aviation Day T-shirt, introducing every participant to a trailblazer whose courage, leadership and excellence continue to inspire Americans across generations.

For the chapter, honoring Gen. James reflects its commitment to ensuring young people learn about pioneers who broke barriers and expanded opportunities for those who followed. As students explored aviation careers, interacted with pilots and aviation professionals, and experienced the excitement of flight, they also learned about a man whose determination proved that no dream is beyond reach.

The tribute comes at a time when Gen. James’ legacy has received renewed national attention, making the chapter’s commitment to celebrating his life even more meaningful. Regardless of where history is displayed, the members of 100 Black Men of Greater Florida Gainesville believe its greatest impact is found when it is shared directly with young people. For eight years, Aviation Day has connected students with mentors and career opportunities while reinforcing the values of leadership, education and service. Each conversation, hands-on activity and inspirational story helps broaden horizons and encourage participants to pursue careers in aviation, STEM and beyond.

By placing Gen. Chappie James’ story into the hands of every child who attended, 100 Black Men of Greater Florida Gainesville continues its mission of preparing youth for success while preserving the legacy of those whose achievements paved the way.
